The Society of the Blind in Malaysia is a non-religious, non- political, national voluntary organisation of blind individuals of all races and from all walks of life resident in Malaysia dedicated to the task of securing equal rights and opportunities for blind people in this country by working collectively and fraternally for the socio-economic advancement of blind people, with the view of enabling them to become responsible, useful and productive citizens.

Objectives:

The objectives of The Society shall be:

  1. To encourage blind people in Malaysia to work for their mutual socio-economic advancement and their common good.
  2. To uphold the rights of blind people to live as participating and contributing citizens of this country and promote their legitimate interests.
  3. To promote communication and understanding among members.
  4. To promote sports and recreation for blind people.
  5. To monitor and/or assess services provided for blind people by government and non-government bodies, and to present the considered views and recommendations of The Society on matters concerning blind people to the relevant bodies.
  6. To co-operate with other organisations to achieve the objectives of The Society.
  7. To work towards overcoming social barriers and to promote integration between blind and sighted people.
  8. To promote the general well-being of blind people.

Membership:

1. There shall be the following categories of membership: -

1.1. Ordinary membership of The Society shall be open to all blind citizens of Malaysia who have attained the age of eighteen years.

1.2. Associate membership of The Society shall be open to sighted persons resident in Malaysia who have attained the age of eighteen years.

1.3. Subscribing membership shall be open to persons of at least eighteen years of age but not resident in Malaysia who wish to contribute to the Progress of The Society.

2. Every application for membership shall be made in the prescribed form and shall be proposed and seconded by two members at least one of whom shall be an ordinary member. The form shall be forwarded together with the prescribed payments to the Secretary-General who shall submit it to the Presidential Council for approval. Such subscription shall be valid for that current year only.

3. Every applicant whose application has been approved as aforesaid shall be admitted as a member of The Society and shall be entitled to the privileges of membership as applicable.

4. The Presidential Council may at its discretion reject any application and shall not be bound to assign reasons therefor.

Membership Fees and Subscriptions:

1. The entrance fee for an ordinary member shall be two Ringgit. There shall be no entrance fee for associate and subscribing members.

2.1. The subscription for an ordinary member shall be six Ringgit per calendar year.

2.2. The subscription for an associate member shall be five Ringgit per calendar year.

2.3. The subscription for a subscribing member shall be five Ringgit per calendar year.

Subscriptions shall be payable as from January 1st of the second calendar year.

2.4. The Presidential Council shall have the power of waiving the subscription of any ordinary member on grounds of financial difficulties on the recommendation of the Secretary-General or the Branch Committee. Such waiving shall be subject to review by the Presidential Council.

3. The due date for subscriptions shall be 31st March of each year.

4. Any member who does not pay his/her subscription by the due date shall be deemed to be in arrears of subscription and shall be denied all privileges of membership until he/she settles his/her accounts. A written notification of the fact shall be served to him/her immediately.

5. Any member whose arrears are not settled by 31st May of each year shall be deemed to have resigned from The Society.

6. Any ordinary member having left OR BEING EXPELLED FROM The Society may only be considered for re-admission on fulfilling the following conditions:

6.1. He/she shall, on application, pay a re-entrance fee of ten Ringgit together with a year's subscription; and

6.2. Such application shall be accompanied by a recommendation from the Branch Committee of his/her area if any, or the Secretary-General.

7. Any member having been expelled from The Society may only be considered for re-admission after a lapse of one year from the date of expulsion. In addition to the conditions described under RULE 6, his/her application shall be accompanied by a letter signed by him/her pledging good conduct.

Privileges of Membership:

Members of SBM can participate in activities and programmes organized by SBM at highly subsidised rates. Such activities and programmes include, but are not restricted to:

  • Adult education classes in Braille reading & writing;
  • Adult education classes in languages;
  • Computer literacy courses;
  • Creative writing courses;
  • Handicraft-making;
  • Cooking classes;
  • Massage and reflexology courses;
  • Forums, workshops and seminars on various aspects of living;
  • Sports competitions;
  • Coaching clinics on chess, table-tennis and ten-pin bowling;
  • Social and recreational activities;
  • Talenttime;
  • Purchase of special items sold by or through SBM.

Members are also given opportunities to represent SBM in programmes and activities organized by other bodies.

In addition, SBM has some programmes that provide financial assistance to its ordinary members:

  • Educational assistance to members with their children’s schooling;
  • Educational assistance to blind students;
  • Interest-free loan to members for acquisition of employment-related equipment;
  • Welfare relief for needy members.
